I was a pretty good player back in the day. On the slower side with above average technical ability. However college took a toll on me and despite some fraternity IM league action i am now a shadow of my former self. My first touch, passing vision, and finishing ability are so rusty that pick up games lead to more frustration than fun. I want to get back to the point where im the third pick in an 11 v 11 game. It got me thinking that we should write an out-of-shape guide to pick up soccer.
Something of a mannifesto for those people who can only play once a week, but still want to be effective on the field. Oct 15, Nat'l Team: United States. You've got to play more. Before my first season started, I started running and training. That was a huge asset to me. Had I just jumped in, I think I would have been frustrated in my early games because I would have been fighting fatigue rather than thinking about the game. As it was, I was able to go into my first game at a decent level of fitness, able to run and breathe the whole game.
It helps to get past all of that before you ever hit the field. Basic skills were also not hard to get back. I think as a teenager I relied more on speed and physicality than strategy and technique. But at age 30, I can appreciate how playing smarter can be advantageous, and save your body some wear and tear. Jan 2, Club: Real Madrid. Definetely, im going thru the same thing.. Its all about being fit, when your fit you can do the things you used to do bc your not thinking about ur body being tired and when u get ur fitness base up then start playing at least 3 times a week I had a really looong layoff.
