Kathy Szeliga, R-Baltimore County, introduced a bill this session that would require high school sports at public and private schools to be classified for biological males, biological females or coeducational. The bill is currently being considered by the House Ways and Means Committee.
Students and schools are authorized to bring specified civil actions. A bipartisan group of Maryland senators introduced a near-identical bill pushing for high school sports to be determined by biological sex. The lawmakers behind the bill are Sens. MPSSAA guidelines state schools should determine on a case-by-case basis whether to allow a student to participate on the sports team of their preferred gender identity. A spokeswoman for Harford County Public Schools said the district would not comment on pending legislation.
