Fried chicken skewers, a clever spin on mussels, a pizza that sticks the landing, and more. See past installments here. The crispy, crunchy chicken is tossed in a slightly sweet, citrusy rub, skewered, and served over a creamy pool of garlic aioli.
The resulting savory-sweet bites really work. Lunch bowl spots β the Sweetgreens and Cavas of the world β produce a convenient, forgettable meal. The Hummus Shop, however, is not that kind of lunch bowl spot. Two forkfuls into it, I was hooked. The star of the show was the crispy, salty fried eggplant pieces, which went down like a bag of potato chips.
The supporting players β ultra-creamy hummus, a hard-boiled egg, pickled veg, multiple sauces, and a fluffy side of pita β were all a cut above. If I lived closer, this would be in my weekly lunch rotation. Case in point: The mussels, which are typically steamed and served in a broth-filled bowl with bread for dipping on the side. Here, the mussels are cooked in pil pil, a Basque sauce, taken out of their shells, and then the whole concoction is poured over a hunk of fluffy sourdough bread.
