To browse Academia. It is probably not exaggerated to state that the French society has never considered itself as a multicultural society. Yet, France is multicultural in the sense that multiple cultural identities are present in the society as a result of decades of mass immigration to the country.
Against this background, this report discusses the challenges that migration related cultural diversity poses for France with special references to education, discrimination in the labour market and political participation.
It argues that the French state deals with issues resulting from migration-related diversity without the commitment to a multicultural society.
It shows that this results in major discrepancies in between the discourse and the situation in practice, and gives concrete examples drawn from successive case studies. It points out to the risk of creating a double standard of citizenship and highlights the limit of the equal treatment strategy.
It gives some indications on how the recent developments in the legislation proved that it could compose with the Republican stance.
