The research investigates the occurrence and behavior of delphinids and harbor porpoises at the northern end of the Istanbul Strait, focusing on environmental factors influencing their distribution and interactions. Through a combination of observational studies and ecological assessments, the study aims to provide insights into the factors that shape cetacean populations in this region, contributing to the understanding of marine biodiversity and conservation efforts.
In addition, changes in the lipid composition across organs suggest fine stratification. It therefore remains technically challenging to describe precisely the lipid organization of these tissues. Both methods generated very similar compositions, but each presented clear advantages. While GC underestimated the amount of short branched fatty acyl-chains, which are specific to cetacean adipose tissues and most probably of primary importance for their functioning, HR-MAS NMR allowed for their exact quantification.
Rapid communications in mass spectrometry : RCM, Stable isotope values d 13 C and d 15 N of darted skin and blubber biopsies can shed light on habitat use and diet of cetaceans, which are otherwise difficult to study.
Non-dietary factors affect isotopic variability, chiefly the depletion of 13 C due to the presence of 12 C-rich lipids. The efficacy of post hoc lipid-correction models normalization must be tested. C:N ratios, d 13 C values and d 15 N values were determined for duplicate control and lipid-extracted skin and blubber of fin Balaenoptera physalus , humpback Megaptera novaeangliae and minke whales B.
Six different normalization models were tested to correct d 13 C values for the presence of lipids. Significant increases were also found for d 15 N values in minke whale skin and fin whale blubber. In fin whale skin, the d 15 N values decreased, with no change observed in humpback whale skin.
