The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and library have partnered with the Ventura County juvenile hall to offer the program, which organizers said is aimed to inspire at-risk and incarcerated youths from Ventura and Los Angeles counties by sharing the story, character and legacy of President Reagan. Thirteen youths have gone through the program since it began in November, and it has been so successful that organizers already are looking to expand it and share it with other presidential libraries and organizations.
A team of library staff members and docents worked on the logistics and planning of the program, which is designed to keep the interest of the youths. Christopher Martinez, supervising deputy probation officer, said program participants are nonviolent and are doing well in the juvenile system, but may have had involvement with gangs or had drug offenses.
