If you're considering sex therapy or looking to know more about it, I'd like to tell you more about this specialty and my approach to my work with clients. Sex therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy, or "talk therapy. In addition, I have advanced training in sexuality, knowing how to help people with a wide range of sexual issues and concerns. You should know that, for me, a good relationship between a client and his or her therapist is essential.
The client-therapist relationship has been shown to be more strongly related to the outcome of therapy than any particular technique. So I begin with a focus on having an honest and supportive relationship with you that allows us to get to the heart of the matter in your life and deal with any bumps in the road that may arise as we work together. I am warm and direct. And our work together is, of course, confidential. We will start by exploring your reason for seeking treatment, your personal history, and clarify your treatment goals.
As I get to know you, I will give you feedback and treatment recommendations. If you are in a romantic relationship, it's usually best if your partner knows you are making contact with me for therapy, particularly if you will want him or her to be involved. The best sex therapy sometimes takes a team approach. I'll be looking at whether there are other professionals who may be able to provide specialized help to address your unique concerns. This could include referrals to a physician, physical therapist, psychiatrist, or other health professional.
