Unfortunately it is a complicated repair that can not be done at sea. Pat made his way to Cape Town using a combination of sheet-to-tiller steering and hand steering, but ultimately decided to drop out of the race. Damien Guillou Retired: 14 November On the 12th of November, two days after leaving the Cape Town photo gate, Damien's self steering broke again, but this time he did not have the spares to repair it.
He sailed back to Cape Town and officially retired on the 14th of November. He said that he did not think he would enjoy the next three months if he continued. He was later able to communicate that his yacht had sunk in 5 minutes but he'd been able to get safely onto his liferaft. A little over 24 hours later he was picked up by Kirsten who then transferred him to a Bulk Carrier headed for Asia.
