To browse Academia. This study presents the results of an archaeological rescue excavation carried out in Ashrafieh plot no. The site contained the remains of a cemetery with 21 inhumation graves dated to the Early Roman Period. The use of the plot as a burial space commenced during the late 1st century BC and continued to the 2nd century AD. Four phases were identified based on the stratigraphic sequence and dating provided by artefactual material. The report involves a discussion of the organization and layout of the graves, their spatial distribution by gender, coffin type, age group, and artefact type.
An osteological assessment was also conducted for the skeletal material followed by a typological and functional study of the associate graves goods. In the summer of a Roman burialsite was excavated, located at present BEY This paper explores the primary findings and architecture of this excavation in detail and analyzes specifically the social, religious and cultural context of the graves with respect to Romanization and cultural exchange in the region.
Romanization is understood here as the the process of exchange and mixture of Roman and indigenous culture. The burial evidence had - for the most part - been retrieved from cemeteries on the fringes of the ancient inhabited areas. These areas were exposed during rescue excavations within the perimeter of new building projects.
We will present an additional survey of the burials found in the BCC during the excavations. The burials will be discussed by period. Some tombs will be discussed in detail while others will be treated as a group. Within the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon and its environs, various forms of burial have been noted from earlier surveys and more recently from chance excavations.
The dominant geology of the Bekaa is limestone, which is easy to cut and shape, making it an excellent material for both funerary structures and artifacts.
