In Florida, manatee season begins on Nov. They can live both inshore and offshore; however, young barracuda are often found inshore in seagrass beds. They have a thick a body with a gray back and white belly. They also have short, rounded snouts. They also have five vertical black bars along their sides.
They get their name from these black bars, as they are thought to resemble the badge of the sergeant major military rank. They can survive in both fresh and salt water. After a few years of age, some will develop into females. Their body is brown to yellow-brown in color and they have a light-colored belly.
