A Co Down man was today Tuesday acquitted of raping a sex worker at knifepoint after the woman admitted she had lied to police. Lee Haughian, who is 25 and from Oldtown Lane in Annalong , has consistently denied raping the woman in her own home last August. During the second day of the trial at Belfast Crown Court, the complainant was cross-examined by defence barrister Gavan Duffy KC about her allegations.
As well as admitting lying to police , the woman also admitted she had deleted text messages between her and Mr Haughian. Following the cross-examination, the hearing rose for a lunch break. Prior to the acquittals, the complainant was called to give evidence and under cross-examination from Mr Duffy she was questioned about her account of what happened in the bedroom of her Belfast home on the afternoon of August 15 last year. She told police she was a sex worker and that after being contacted by Mr Haughian via an escort website, they agreed a price for her sexual services and that he called at her home at around She also alleged that he produced a Stanley knife from the pocket of his trousers, threatened her with it and held the blade to her throat whilst raping her.
The defence barrister asked her about a series of text messages she and Mr Haughian exchanged before he called to her home and she accepted she had deleted them. She also claimed that as she was being raped she screamed several times. She was then asked about the account she gave to police who attended her home less than an hour after the alleged incident and an interview she had with police the following day.
The woman was also asked about a medical examination which was conducted in the aftermath of what she claimed occurred. This, she accepted, included a complete lack of any injuries to her genital area or her throat. Following her cross-examinations and her confessions that she lied to police, the Crown offered no further evidence and Mr Haughian was acquitted.
