At the art museum where I worked as a curator for 13 years, I was in charge of many different projects, big and small: I curated blockbuster exhibitions about Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, I co-wrote exhibition catalogues for artists having their first solo exhibitions in the U.
But one of my favorite projects was a rather small one: a tiny, one-room gallery dedicated to Black Mountain College, a little enclave in Western North Carolina that was one of the most exciting and experimental spaces in midcentury America, a place responsible for transforming the lives and careers of many artistsβand not just the students who attended the college, but the professors who were involved there, too, on both short-term and long-term stays.
