It's called a guaranteed basic income and it's an idea that's gaining steam locally. A pilot program is now being proposed in Prince George's County. But there's a glitch -- nobody is exactly sure how to pay for it.
There are currently more than guaranteed basic income pilot programs underway across the country including in Alexandria and Montgomery County.
Both are already sending out checks to selected recipients. She hopes the pilot program leads to permanent government funding. While there is no shortage of people in need including seniors, young people aging out of foster care and those coming home from incarceration there is a shortage of money. Alexandria is funding its program with federal Covid money and the Montgomery County government chipped in funds along with support from charities.
