AUSTIN, TX β Police on Tuesday released more surveillance camera images of a theft suspect who's cashed several cashier's checks intended as deposits on an RV he placed for sale on Craigslist without delivering the vehicle to prospective buyers.
The Austin Police Department is still looking for the alleged swindler, having issued a previous press advisory on Jan. In new images released on Tuesday, the unidentified suspect is seen cashing three more cashier's checks at a Speedy Cash store in Austin that were meant as earnest money to buy the phantom RV.
The identify of the suspect is unknown, but he goes by the alias "Clayton" in his Craigslist dealings, according to police. In the original police advisory earlier this month, police said a victim contacted "Clayton" after seeing his ad for an RV.
She contacted him, made arrangements to purchase the vehicle, and mailed him a cashier's check as a deposit. The suspect cashed the woman's check at a local bank in Austin, police said, but failed to deliver the RV. He essentially ghosted the woman who never heard back from him after he cut off contact. In light of the scam, police took the opportunity to issue consumer tips to prevent from being defrauded:.
