I was invited to call a ball in Bordeaux, France. Quite a challenge for me as I had to call it in French, basically untouched since my schooldays! This was, they think, the first English Regency Ball to be held in Bordeaux. My wife and I were treated right-royally, everyone danced with verve and enthusiasm and we had a week of beautiful spring sunshine - truly a celebration of the arrival of Spring. The documentary was shown on national television in July This was particular fun for me as most of the guests were Regency dancers and my friends, including a number of my students.
So, this fund-raising ball was held in the beautiful Adam Hall and guests were able to visit the magnificant art gallery as well as dance. A Grand Regency Ball that we all enjoyed. My students were invited and, while the guests were eating, they danced the Gallini cotillion Le Pouvoir de la Beaute as a demonstartion dance.
As one of the guest officers said "Soldiers learn to march in time to music, so of course they can dance in time to music. He expected all his officers to be able to dance. I was delighted to be invited to call for this ball.
Malta is such an exotic location, and the ballrroms we danced in were amazingly beautiful. They've been holding Jane Austen events for years but this was the first time the Town Council decided to invest in a Regency Ball.
It proved to be a good fund-raiser and a magnificent success - and looks set fair to becoming an annual fixture.
