Play both covers and in tributes. At my core I'm a backbeat drummer. The role has led me to be the first point of contact for new deps and I give them crash courses in what to expect onstage cues etc. I need to know the venue's exact address and, if the load-in is different, an address or a description detailed enough that I can work it out for myself.
I also need to know if there is on-site parking or not, so I can budget for street parking. There are no "best gigs" and "best venues" as, large or small, the best gigs can be had anywhere. Many of the best venues I've played at have been in continental Europe.
During my time in tribute bands, I played a travelling show in France, called Legends Of Rock, which visited many of the Zeniths around the country. Generally Zeniths are mixed-purpose sporting arenas. With the size of that production, plus flying off and riding around on a tour bus, that was my best time and the best gigs I've done.
I knew I could possibly never get the chance to play gigs of that size again and so I made sure to rinse myself every single night. Again, it doesn't matter what size the place is, but I thrive on interaction with the audience. If the singer is doing their job and working them well, my job as a drummer becomes so much easier. It's the singer's job to get people up on their feet and engaged I began playing live in the early s and spent the rest of the decade playing in originals band.
