Yes, Littorio will have excellent penetration with armor-piercing shells, but this excellent penetration will only be at close range, and at long ranges this penetration will drop sharply. Here are some diagrams. On some of them I marked in red where the magazines are.
So yes, the battleship Yamato will currently have the best magazine protection. After Yamato, only Nagato will have such excellent magazine armor. Many nations only envy such protection⦠If the ship does not have normal protection in the cellars, then this is a quick death for the ship. To be fair, nothing short of an Amagi in the current meta stands much of a chance against the Scharnhorst.
Until we get a better BR spread, we are stuck with a very compressed system that is going to favor the Scharnhorst, Amagi, and a couple of other ships. Besides that however - it really struggled against much more than that, the low pen combined with the short fuse time made it difficult to really do critical damage against ships with even a very weak turtleback.
However, when I was able to close the distance or rather Bofors let me get closer I found the guns did start to work. I was able to kill a Renown pretty handily and did manage to ammorack a Hood, albeit this was only when I was about km away from his spawn.
Some other ships we tested included was Mutsu and a Kongo class battlecruiser - these due to their relatively poor armor I was able to hurt at medium range and did not have to close the distance as much, though handling the returning fire is a different story.
