After hitting a eye-popping. Who else could it be? McCarthy was the most unstoppable player in the area. If she got a bunt down, forget it, she was on first. If she got on first, forget it, she was going to steal second. And so on until the Wildcats scored and ultimately won the game. Monrovia won 20 games this season. The sparkplug of it all was McCarthy. There was simply no getting her out.
McCarthy struck out just four times this season. She was on base 70 percent of the time and she had multi-hit performances in 17 games this season. It all came back to speed, though.
Already fast to begin with, McCarthy took the advice of her soon-to-be college at Cal-State Northridge and joined the track team in order to improve her form on the base paths. That led to a schedule that went something like this: track practice on Monday, softball practice on Tuesday, softball game on Wednesday, track meet on Thursday and another softball game on Friday.
My college coach wanted me to work on my form. I used to run a little bit flat-footed, so my track coach told me to get my knees up and run on my toes. In track, McCarthy ran the and meters. In softball, she hit lead off and played center field. McCarthy was at the forefront of those wins, going 3-for-4 in both games and scoring five runs combined. Athletic success is nothing new to the McCarthy family. He is now a defensive lineman at UCLA. Now that Elise has gone on to carve out her own place in Monrovia High sports history, she is prepared to take full advantage the next time the sibling rivalry heats up again.
But the Wildcats had some infield issues that appeared glaring early in the season. Guzman briefly moved his center fielder, Elise McCarthy, to the infield while waiting for his up-and-coming infielders to get accustomed to Rio Hondo League softball.
