It's free to register your baby. If you need a birth certificate , you can pay a fee for the certificate when you register the birth. You need to register your child's birth with us within 60 days — the hospital does not do this for you.
You can also apply for a birth certificate when you complete the registration. You will need a birth certificate to access Medicare and to apply for government benefits like parental leave. Parent s can register the baby using our online form. Other persons registering the baby must use our paper application form.

If you change your mind about your baby's name after you register the birth, you'll need to pay a fee to change the baby's name. To complete the registration form you'll need information and documents about the parents, baby and birth. If you are registering online, you can make a start and save your application so you can finish it when you're ready. Parents listed on the online birth registration form must supply at least 3 forms of current identity, one of each from Categories 1, 2 and 3.
