Just curious on your thoughts of Union City based on your personal experience. I live in Weehawken off Blvd E. To me it seems like a melting pot of lower middle class immigrants who are generally good people from the ones I've spoken with. Though the parts I've been to look kinda old and small, the place seems to be pretty clean and I don't see a lot of garbage around.
But I wonder if its just because I'm not educated enough about the place. Thoughts, comments? I've spent a fair amount of time in UC, go to church there, and have walked from one end to the other.
Your description of the people sounds right. But it's a pretty ugly and junky looking place, IMO. It feels like a place of transients and people struggling to survive who can't or at least don't bother to try to make the place pretty.
There are a lot of single family homes, all squeezed together with no yards, just driveways for cars. I suspect many are occupied by renters, not owners, because they seem so rundown - not even flowers in the windows. When we were buying up here we looked at a place in UC and saw an article somewhere that called UC the next Hoboken. We were coming from Hoboken. However, now I think it was just realtor hype. Bottom line, I wouldn't want to live in UC and am not sure I even like living so near it.
The ugliness and the lack of English get to be oppressive. The language thing is nothing against Spanish-speakers, but social life becomes tribal.
