One new thing to follow, however, is a dark and gritty new Belgian parter over on Sky Arts, which tells the harrowing story of a group of Lithuanian women recruited by sex traffickers. All these aspects of this terrible situation were laid bare in the first episode of Matrioshki meaning Russian doll. It was gruesome scene, with each gunshot provoking a gasp and a little jump from me and my co-viewers. It then settled down. We met the auditioners some who were really bad dancers and centred on the friendship between Daria and Kasandra.
The auditions were held under the pretence of hiring dancers for a new troupe to tour Belgium, Holland and Germany, and the women — who so desperately wanted to get out of the grinding, freezing poverty portrayed in Vilnius — were overjoyed when they were selected.
The women were so eager to go with them to this new world of promised opportunity, money and freedom that they — especially Daria — forged signatures to get on that bus out of town.
And this is what kept me watching. The characters — especially Ray, with his roll-neck jumper and his slightly Hitler-esque sweep of lank fringe — were cardboard cut-out stereotypes. This drama was made in , and certainly looked like it in places, but it was set up to follow Daria and her colleagues across Europe on a terrifying journey. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
