One high profile politician has previously called for the closure of Punternet - arguing it fuels demand for prostitution. And campaigner Trishna Datta has launched an online petition calling for the website - which is based in California - to be closed down. She says she respects the right of women to work in the sex industry but says they should be able to make a platform for themselves. Trishna says that instead punters expose the women they are rating and reviewing to danger by advertising their locations and contact numbers - even though punters can post anonymously.

Punternet allows men to look up sex workers in its UK-wide directory then rate them after the encounter. Some of the reviews posted from Manchester shed a harsh light on the treatment of sex workers in the city - from those who work in brothels to those who meet up with men in potential dangerous scenarios on the streets.
