Kuromi is a white rabbit with a black devil-like tail and wears a black jester's hat with a pink skull that changes its expression to match her mood. Fittingly, her birthday is on Halloween October 31st. Kuromi's name, when translated from Japanese to English, is " black beauty ". On her debut in , Kuromi took the punk , scene , and goth communities by storm and quickly became very successful and beloved among fans due to her unique, contrasting yet similar appearance and "naughty" personality compared to My Melody which explains her signature "angry" eyes , and due to this immense popularity, she since become a flagship character for Sanrio.
True to her rivalry, Kuromi even sometimes surpasses My Melody herself in official Sanrio rankings and some media often shows her directly competing against her counterpart. The song has both a Japanese as well as an English version, and a dance challenge to both versions was created where fans would be able to submit their own videos of themselves doing a set dance routine for a chance to be featured in a music video for the song.
