This meandering account all leads up to the seismic moment when Ted is hailed by Sasha backstage in an Eastern European capital. Yes, Sasha, Sasha from the old days in the Berlin commune! And hence this meetingβ¦. Sasha tells Ted he wants to spy for the West.
He has access to files and documents and information all of which he will give to the West, for nothing, just out of anger and hatred of the regime. However, Sasha stipulates that he will only hand these goodies over to Ted, in person, no-one else. To manage this, Sasha explains, to cement their bond, Ted must offer himself as a spy to his Stasi masters.
