When I first arrived at ABC Far North in , our breakfast host then was Jason Hagen β a man with a well-deserved reputation for encouraging emerging musicians. Roz hails from FNQ , and they played some of their earliest gigs at one of our premier events β the Tablelands Folk Festival , held each October at Yungaburra , on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. The 33rd festival gets underway tonight, and continues over the weekend.
Roz and Chanel were born to sing together. Each has abundant talent as a singer, player and writer. It would be easy to write a lengthy list of the wonderful ingredients that combine to make a Docs show such a treat. When these two women perform together, something magical happens β they make songs that take you to places both tangible and emotional, locations best visited with good friends. Far North Queensland has been blessed with an abundance of musical talent.
We have great musicians, fine songwriters, first class bands. The music I heard on that compilation convinced me β this is the place for me! As time went by, I got to know something of the Ken McKay story. On Thursday night, November 22, musicians and music lovers turned out in big numbers to honour Ken McKay, and to raise funds for his struggle with lung cancer.
