MESA was founded in August by co-founders and co-executive directors Arthur Samuels and Pagee Cheung to offer an alternative, non-selective, public high school option to the families of the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. We graduated our first class of seniors in June and have graduated over students to date.
Our students come from more than forty different middle schools, including traditional public, parochial, and charter schools. Some are advanced students coming from magnet schools; others are beginning English Language Learners. What they all have in common is a desire to succeed. MESA students will develop a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics through an intensive college readiness program, develop critical thinking and self-advocacy.
MESA graduates will internalize the connection between academic excellence, perseverance, and economic opportunity, empowering them to assert control over their professional futures. A quick fact about me is that I have taught every single grade for the last 10 years from kindergarten through high school in Queens, Brooklyn, and The Bronx.
