The Personal Light Electric Vehicle PLEV market has grown rapidly in the last decade and is an important part of the electrification and decarbonisation of urban transport systems, particularly for short journeys.
Electric propulsion systems are now used in a diverse range of light vehicles, from pedal-assistance in on-road and off-road electric bicycles and 3- and 4-wheeled urban delivery vehicles e-bikes , to numerous other vehicles such as hoverboards and electric scooters e-scooters , many of which are currently not legal for road use.
The battery energy storage systems for PLEVs sold in the UK predominantly use the Lithium-ion cell chemistry, which is also widespread in other market sectors such as personal electronic devices, electric passenger cars and grid energy storage. All these markets benefit from the high energy density and power density offered by Lithium-ion cells, and the rapid growth in the global market for Lithium-ion cells has resulted in manufacturing economies of scale which have significantly improved their affordability.
