It is necessary to avoid crowded places where large groups of people gather. There are still violent incidents not only in the capital, but also along the border with Indonesia.
Domestic flights from the capital to Lae, Vanimo, Kiunga and Wewak have been suspended for an indefinite period of time. As a whole, there is an increased security risk in the country. Cases of armed robberies and violent attacks are common. The capital Port Moresby, Mt. Hagen and Lae are particularly at risk, as well as the highway journey to the Nadzab airport.
It is recommended not to undertake independent trips, but only organised trips with a local escort. Women travelling alone are at a particular risk for their personal safety. Do not take any walks or inland trips after nightfall. The state of healthcare does not meet the Western European standards. The Western Province, and above all the island of Daru, are regions at risk for cholera spread.
Other areas affected, according to the Department of Health, are the provinces of Morobe, Madang, East Sepik, West Sepik, Southern Highlands, as well as the metropolitan administrative area with Port Moresby as a center.
