Around , students, including those considered low income, choose to pay thousands of dollars in out-pocket costs in pursuit of smaller class sizes, specific academic programs offered or the prestige of attending the private institutions.
The costs include tuition, housing, transportation and food after all grants and scholarships. Of the16 private college students and federal aid grant receipts CalMatters interviewed, most considered the expense worth it. Some worked multiple jobs or lived at home to supplement their financial aid to attend their private institution of their choice, CalMatters reported.
Data can then be further filtered by race. CSU lacked consistent definitions in the past, Schwartzkopf said, so CSU cannot compare the most-recent data to previous years. The survey data shows reports of harassment and discrimination based on race or ethnicity, the most reports related to any single protected class. Other reports were withdrawn, resolved through methods such as mediation or referred to other offices.
University officials said non-responses could reflect fear, trauma or other dynamics. The bill builds on Senate Bill , signed into law this fall, which established a new designation for colleges and universities in California that excel at serving Black students.
Schools in the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems, as well as independent higher education institutions, would be eligible for the grants.
